Rockbank was, in the words of Victorian Places, sparsely settled in a residential sense still in the 2010s, which is why the Melton township was long described as a satellite town. Since then new estates have filled in around it and nearby at places such as Deanside and Plumpton. About 2,600 people lived in Rockbank at the 2021 Census, with a median age of 31. The basalt cones of Mount Cottrell and Mount Kororoit rise to the east of the Melton township, a reminder of the volcanic plains underfoot.
