Melton South is one of the suburbs Melton's housing spread into during the 1970s, according to Victorian Places. About 11,400 people lived there at the 2021 Census. The basalt clays found north and west of Melbourne shrink and swell with the seasons, and in an older yard the signs are sunken paving, lawns that stay wet and walls that lean. Walls, paving, decks and other structural work under a domestic building contract worth more than $10,000 must be carried out by a practitioner registered with the Building and Plumbing Commission, so ask who is registered and whether anything needs a building permit.
