Melton the township sits about 36 km north-west of central Melbourne on the Western Highway to Ballarat, and it is one of 31 suburbs in the City of Melton. Victorian Places records that its population quadrupled from 4,491 in 1971 to 18,055 in 1981, so a lot of the township's housing and gardens date from that era. At the 2021 Census the Melton locality had about 8,000 residents, a median age of 40, and a larger share of townhouses and semi-detached homes than most of the City.
